In summer you don’t need to look far to find beautiful flowers. They burst from borders and spill from hedgerows. Here Emilia Robledo of Narcissus Flower School in Edinburgh shows how to use this abundance to create a beautiful arrangement for your home.
What you'll need:
Mimosa
Rosemary
Alchemilla mollis
Carrot flower
Larkspur
Spray roses (the ones used here are ‘Jana’)
Alliums
Long stem roses (‘Vuvuzela’)
You will also need:
Scissors
Knife
Pot tape
Oasis
Dish
Small Urn
- First soak the oasis in water, place it in the dish and secure it with tape then position it in the urn. Next trim the flowers and greenery, stripping off low foliage and cutting the ends of the stems on the diagonal to encourage the uptake of water.
- Use the mimosa stems to create a framework then start to fill out the shape with alchemilla. Add the carrot flowers to create a lacy effect.
- Once the foliage and frothy flowers are in place you can start to add larger blooms and more intense colour. Use the larkspur to create height and width and then fill in the spaces with roses and alliums.
- Try to create a balanced effect without being rigorously symmetrical. Place the roses in small groups, rather than dotting them around evenly, and make sure that the stems of all the flowers and foliage are long enough to create a natural, arching effect.
- To care for the arrangement, top up with water every day.
